While most people know Beidler Forest for its 1,800 acres of old-growth swamp, Audubon South Carolina also works on restoring thousands of acres every year as part of this sanctuary. Part of this restoration is now open to the public as part of the woodland-grassland trails near the entrance to the visitor center. Join Audubon staff for a casual hike through restored Longleaf Pine savanna and native grasslands, looking for plants, birds, and other critters!

South Carolina Native Plant Week was signed into law in 2018 to permanently establish the third week of October as Native Plant Week. This year, join us at one of our plant sales across the state to celebrate, and share the resources at scnps.org with your friends and family to help promote native plants!

DNR describes it: The Preserve is a blend of prairie-like meadows, wetlands, upland swamps, lichen-covered boulders, wildflowers, wildlife and forests, including the blackjack oaks. This small area is all that remains of the once widespread prairie system in South Carolina.

Join Dr. Brian Scholtens, professor at the College of Charleston, for an evening excursion to observe moths and other insects that are attracted to MV lights after dark. Dr. Scholtens will set up two light sheets that will attract moths after dark and participants will be able to observe, photograph, and learn about some local moth species. What arrives is always a surprise!

Dr. Scholtens is an assistant professor at the College of Charleston in the Biology Department where he teaches Entomology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Introductory Biology. The lecture will provide an introduction to the world of moths, emphasizing their natural history, and feature his work on moth biodiversity in the Southeast.
