Lecture Topic: Right Plant, Right Place: Planting in the Right-of-Way
Speakers: Rebecca Fanning and Diane Lauritsen
Lecture Description: Join us for a conversation about planting the right way in the right of way with the Town Naturalist for Sullivan's Island Rebecca Fanning and Commissioner of Mount Pleasant Waterworks Dr. Diane Lauritsen. In this discussion, we will consider the effects of vegetative growth above ground and below on critical infrastructure. Rebecca will share her insights gained from collaborating with Dominion Energy and the SC Dept. of Transportation to reassess palmetto trees on the Island slated for removal due to proximity to overhead power lines. Then, she will engage Dr. Lauritsen in a discussion of how underground utilities are affected by the root zones of different plants. Finally, the two will propose various strategies that would be as beneficial ecologically as they would work well within the confines of utility easements.
Join us after the lecture for social time with members and some complimentary snacks!
