Description
Congaree Creek Heritage Preserve is in Lexington County, S.C. with the Congaree River defining its eastern border and the city of Cayce surrounding the rest of the preserve. This area is considered an urban forest, as much of the preserve borders a city. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) Heritage Trust Program maintains this 1,286-acre parcel of land to protect and preserve the historic and precontact cultural sites that date up to 12,000 years ago. The area is also significant for its ecological and geological features.
Herrick says "My records indicate that about the 2nd week in March we've seen Red Buckeye, May-Apple, Spring-Beauty, Grape Ferns, Wild Geranium, Cranefly Orchids, Pinxter Azaleas, and other sorts of Spring Ephemerals on the State Road side."
