Master Naturalist Jess Holm will be our guide at the Wateree Heritage Preserve.
If you joined us on our tour of 40 Acre Rock this spring, you surely saw the vast swathes of land ruined by the Haile Gold mine. The Wateree tract that we will visit on this field trip is land purchased by Haile for mitigation purposes.
The HP is off US378 between US 601 and the Wateree River. Look for Goodwill Rd. It is on the north side of US378. Follow Goodwill Rd. to the registration area. There is a kiosk there. We will gather here to arrange a carpool From there we will drive to the top of the mountain where there is a nice overlook. Jess will talk about geology and natural history there and then lead us down the mountain to a swamp at the base.
Please bring water, a hat, bug spray and wear sturdy boots. There's no hunting on Sundays so we should be safe but you're always welcome to wear bright colors.
There is a restroom on the property. We will try to ensure that it is unlocked while we're there. There are several fast food chains on US378 (Garner's Ferry Rd.) that might make good places to visit on your way to the HP.
