Description
Kingsburg Bay Field Trip
Who: All native plant enthusiasts invited! Led by Sudie Thomas, who is the State Board Lisa Matthews Bay Chair. She is local to the Pee Dee, and works with State Board Kingsburg Bay Chair Lisa Lord, who is native to the Lowcountry.
What: This is our chance to have a guided plant walk (read: slower than a hike) in the local ~20 acre Carolina Bay that the state level of the Native Plant Society owns and manages. This is a Restoration (Protect - Restore - Educate!) project that is funded by grants, the State cut of membership dues, and donations by members and chapters. Our Silent Auction from the Kayak Picnic Event was meant to raise money for this landscape - we will reschedule our fundraiser that was thunderstormed out.
When: Sunday July 27th. There is limited parking onsite. See carpool information below. Arrival at Bay 9am. Walk will take 2-2.5 hours.
Carpool times and locations:
Meet at 8:00am - Leaving at 8:15am- Clemson University Extension, 2685 S Irby St # K, Florence, SC 29505 https://maps.app.goo.gl/BLML4GFyoFdyBF486
Meet at 8:40am - Leaving at 8:55am St. Luke Park, 539 Chinaberry Rd. Johnsonville, SC https://maps.app.goo.gl/W6EoP4iMZvx7JrSSA
Where: Kingsburg Bay is approximately 40 minutes south of Florence.
Why: Our Pee Dee chapter can help support this Restoration project in many ways! Through donations, through growing and nursing natives ourselves that we can then transplant into the Bay, through volunteer opportunities such as removing certain trees or unwanted plants...there are many ways we can rally around this precious habitat.
How: Please be prepared for heat! Hat, water, sunscreen, closed toe shoes, a small towel to cool yourself with some of your water. Much of the walk will be in full sun.
