Field Trip: Green Swamp Preserve

Due to inclement weather on the original date (May 4th) this trip has been rescheduled to June 1st. 

Join us on a field trip to explore a natural gem just north of the Grand Strand. The Green Swamp is a nature preserve owned by The Nature Conservancy, southwest of Wilmington, NC. It is one of the finest examples of Longleaf Pine Savanna in our region and is home to wetland and carnivorous plants. Likely botanical sightings include milkworts, orchids, pitcher plants, and sundews. We will be keeping our eyes open for Venus Fly Traps which flower in May and June.

This will be a slow, non-strenuous hike (less than three miles), but there will be uneven ground and extended standing. It may be hot, sunny, and humid so plan accordingly. Please make sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, hats, bugspray, and personal items (e.g. snacks, medications). Close-toed shoes are required, long pants and sleeves are highly recommended.

Sunday, June 1st

We will be exploring the Preserve from 10AM - 12PM. For carpooling groups, we will plan to leave at 8:45AM and return by 1:15PM. 

Carpooling: Carpooling is encouraged due to limited parking. We will have a carpool meet up location at the Planet Fitness in Socastee (5020 Dick Pond Rd, Myrtle Beach, SC 29588). If you would like to carpool, please meet here at 8:30AM. The group will leave at 8:45AM to arrive at the Green Swamp at 10AM. If you are traveling from points further north or do not wish to carpool, participants can meet at the Green Swamp at 10AM.
