Sumter National Forest

Explore a mature oak-hickory-beech forest on the banks of the Enoree River.

Date: May 24, 2025

Location: Forest Service Road 334 (The GPS coordinates are 34.56132 N, 81.75540 W.)

Directions: From Columbia, take I-26W to exit 60 (SC-66 or Whitmire Hwy.) east.  Turn left at Renno Rd. This road becomes Philson Rd. when it crosses SC-72.  Turn right onto Ridge Rd.  The pavement will run out and you'll be on dirt road the rest of the way.  FS Road 334 is the second left.  The site is about 1 3/4 hours from Columbia.

What to Expect and What to Bring:

We should see all 3 forms of Asimina.  Also Rhododendron eastmanii, Trillium rugelii,and Frasera caroliniana.  There are a variety of spring wildflowers at this site though we may be a little late to see them blooming.   You'll want to wear boots, a hat, and weather-appropriate clothing.  Please bring sunscreen, water and a snack.  There is no restroom on the site.
